The year will be remembered for a lot of things, some will be plenty science amazing seats of 2017 . Amazing feats of achievement in the area of Science will be one of those things.
Science have done great in the past one year, there are great innovations and advancements in all areas from health care, to rocket science, to agriculture, and even to the trending block chain technology and cryptocurrency . The advancement is exponential and many people without science background can till appreciate this advancements.
Here in this post I have compile a list of eight (8) amazing feats achieved by scientists this year, in no particular order. These feats are the works of many years of research and experimentation, some of these feats are just a step in the direction of something bigger. Watch out for 2018. Here is the list below:
1. Artificial Intelligence (AI)
Researchers at DEEPMIND(GOOGLE owned artificial intelligence researchers) developed and taught AI to navigate complex environment. That is a major step in making self governing robots. DeepMind now under Google. In a recent interview, DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis said that the headcount at his artificial intelligence lab has grown to seven-hundred since it was acquired by Google in 2014 for a reported four-hundred-million-dollars. Earlier this week, Hassabis told Prince Harry during an interview on Radio 4 that DeepMind’s headcount has gone from around 100 in 2014 to over 700 today. He went on to note that there are over 60 nationalities and more than 400 PhDs inside DeepMind.
2. Gene Editing
Scientist in the US have successfully edited the genes in the human body. This is a major break through because it could allow us eliminate genetic diseases, and possibly create a new class of “SUPER HUMAN”
3. Space Travel
SpaceX relaunched a recycle rocket making space travel even cheaper. This is Sci-Fi becoming real. Reusing a Falcon 9 rocket booster can save $18 Million per Launch.
4. Regenerative Medicine
This area saw major stride in growing human tissue and even organs in laboratory. These break through will allow us to repair damage nerves and grow entire organs and limps.
5. Super Metallic conductor
For nearly 100 years, scientists have dreamed of turning the lightest of all the elements, hydrogen, into a metal.
Now, in a stunning act of modern-day alchemy, scientists at Harvard University have finally succeeded in creating a tiny amount of what is the rarest, and possibly most valuable, material on the planet, they reported in the journal Science.
Metallic hydrogen has no resistance and can give us high speed and improved rocketry. This discovery no matter how impressive is not without controversy. Experts have cast doubts on the claims of the two scientists, Ranga Dias and Isaac Silvera, both physicists at Harvard University. They might have mistaken something else for the important metal, a number of other scientists have said.
6. A new Tech to find Water in Arid areas
Scientist came up with a new device that can pull water from the thin air. This invention will help areas with little access to clean water, it will really be needed in Africa, especially in the Sahara.
7. Motherless Birth
Scientist grew a lamp in an artificial womb. This uterus imitation will lower the mortality and the disease rate of premature babies.
The fetal lambs were grown in a temperature-controlled, near-sterile environment and breathe amniotic fluid, as they would normally do in the womb.
Their hearts pump blood through their umbilical cord into a gas exchange machine outside the bag and electronic monitors measure vital signs, blood flow and other crucial functions. 8 lamps were used.
The eight lambs were kept in the womb-like environments for over four weeks. During this time, their lungs and brains grew, they opened their eyes, grew wool and learned to swallow.
8. A New earth ?
The new planet is SUPER-EARTH LHS 1140B, it was first noticed in 2014 by scientist in Chile. In 2017 Scientist found it exact location, it is beyond our solar system and the believe life could exist there, the exoplanet orbiting a red star in our milky way galaxy holds the best hope for alien life so far.
Just like Earth, this planet sits in the coveted habitable zone, the region around a star where temperatures are just right for liquid water to pool on a planet’s surface. That make this place an exciting candidate in the search for life outside our Solar System.
I believe 2018 will hold more interesting discoveries for the scientist, science enthusiast and the world at large.
