MTN the leading telecommunications company in Africa, the company reached another milestone recently, during it collaboration with its partner Ericsson they successfully tested their 5G capabilities in Johannesburg, South Africa.
MTN and Ericsson trialled the first tests for lightning-fast 5G in Africa during the first week of 2018, with a live demonstration on Monday.
This follows the signing by the two companies of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) at AfricaCom 2017 to collaborate on the rollout of 5G technologies in South Africa, one of the first of its kind in Africa.
The 5G trial with MTN achieved over 20Gbps with less than 5ms latency, which is the highest achieved on a mobile network in Africa.
The 5G trial is based on commercially available baseband hardware and 5G mobility is supported.
MTN has a 4G license in Nigeria and could look forward deploying the technology in the country in the near future.
MTN has collaborated with network equipment provider Ericsson on its 5G trial and found that the technology is at least 100 times faster than 4G.
