Naked Mole Rat May Hold the Key to never growing Old

Naked Mole Rat

Naked Mole Rat

Probably you have not heard of the Naked Mole Rat, well, now you have, it is a rodent with great abilities, infact its unique abilities is why it is being feature in this blog.

These Mammals are superstars in the animal kingdom, the have achieved feats that very few animal can. Below I will list the unique abilities of this rodent kind:

  • The Can never get Cancer! Yes, you read that well.
  • They can survive approximately 18 minutes  without oxygen. The achieved that by switching their body from using one fuel to another. Scientist are currently researching how this can be adopted in the treatment of stroke.
  • They resistant to some kind of pains.
  • Their greatest achievement till date is the ability or inability(depending on your perspective) to not age.

Moles live together in colony of 300, they live in barrow. This is the reason why the can survive where there is little carbon dioxide and oxygen.

Old but not Aged

According to a study on the mortality and lives history of  thousands of mole rat, it was discovered that moles are the only mammals that their risked of death do not increase as the grow old as it occurs in other mammals.

Caleb Finch, a biogerontologist at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles who was not involved in the new study said “This is remarkably low mortality,” and he added “At advanced ages, their mortality rate remains lower than any other mammal that has been documented.”

Researcher have long known that Naked mole usually show few signs of aging and by far surpass the life span expected of a rodent this size. Mice in captivity live at most 4 years; based on their size, naked mole rats would not be expected to live past 6 years. Instead, some live beyond 30 years, and even at that age breeding females stay fertile.

Data On Mole Rat

Comparative biologist Rochelle Buffenstein has studied the animals for over thirty years and has, quite literally, collected a lifetime’s worth of knowledge. For every animal in her care, she recorded the date of birth and when it died, and whether it had been killed for an experiment or given away to other researchers.

What she found was astonishing, says Buffenstein, who works at the longevity-focused Google biotech spinoff Calico in San Francisco, California. Naked mole rats appear to flout the Gompertz law, a mathematical equation that describes aging. In 1825, British man of science Benjamin Gompertz found that the chance of dying rises exponentially with age; in humans, for example, it doubles roughly each eight years when we reach the age of thirty. The law applies to all or any mammals after adulthood, says João Pedro de Magalhães, a gerontologist at the University of Liverpool in the United Kingdom.

Studies have shown that naked mole rats have very active dna repair and high levels of chaperones, these are proteins that facilitate or help other proteins to fold correctly. “I think the animals keep their house really neat and clean, rather than accumulate damage” that causes the physical deterioration related to age, Buffenstein says.

I may not be a scientist, but i think mankind’s quest for a slower aging process could be hidden in the Naked Mole Rat. With more research and money invested towards slowing mortality, with progress like this, we may be getting close.
