Screen Display , Camera And Speaker

The first thing you notice when you look at the Vivo Nex s is the screen display, which may never come to market, is its ultra-bright OLED display. The phone isn’t completely bezel-less — there’s still a slight chin below the display to house the driver — but there’s no notch to be found at the top of the screen, as Vivo has developed clever solutions for the earpiece and front-facing camera. Its bezels measure 1.8 millimeters all around, except for the chin, which is 4.3mm. A Vivo rep said the company could slim that bezel down even further to create a true full-view display in a Vivo variant. With such slim bezels, there’s no room for a front-facing camera, so Vivo hid the lens on top of the phone, very clever I reckon. The lens pops up when you tap the selfie mode in the Camera app.

The company is simply innovative at what the have done to their speakers. Instead of using a traditional speaker, the Nex S conducts audio through vibrations in the OLED glass.

Vivo has embedded a fingerprint sensor supplied by Goodix into the display. And while it’s not the first smartphone to claim the feature it is one of the highest-profile examples to date. In-screen fingerprint sensors have been in the works for quite some time, but companies haven’t been able to get it to work well enough to actually bake it into a device. Apple and Samsung are both rumored to have worked on the feature, only to discover that the technology wasn’t reliable, well according to both of them. Vivo have made it work and deserves all the credit.

The phone’s battery is a large one, at 4,000 mAh, and Vivo is using a full-HD+ AMOLED panel for the display. Also keeping in line with modern trends is a dual-lens camera system on the back, that combines 12- and 5-megapixel sensors.

So far all as we can tell, availability is the only problem that this phone has. Like so many other groundbreaking Chinese phones, the Nex line will only be available in China (for now, anyway) later this month and almost certainly won’t make it to to the US shores, as Vivo doesn’t import its wares to the U.S.

Like most Chinese phones, the wireless network compatibility with networks in most countries the West  is poor, so even if you have a way of getting a unit of Nex S, there is high possibility it wont work.

While the West will likely not use this great phone, that is not the case with the rest of the world. With so many Chinese brands dominating Africa and Nigeria in particular, Vivo may want to explore this new frontier. The likes of Techno, iTel, Oppo, Zte and others will have a new competitors in the African turf.
