BlackFly Flying Car is the Latest in The Trend of Personal Flying Vehicle

BlackFly Flying car is created by the Palo Alto-based firm known as Opener. Flying cars, personal flying vehicle, personal aerial vehicle or personal aircraft is a growing trend in recent times.
There are other rival flying cars that are currently in development across the globe. If you are following this blog, you will recalled I posted about Kitty Hawk latest personal aerial vehicle called Flyer.

The vehicles will eventually cost the same as a typical SUV, its creators claim

Both Blackfly’s Opener and Flyer’s Kitty Hawk are both funded Mr Larry Page.
Mr. Larry Page is a billionaire and co -founder of Google. Currently CEO of Alphabets INC.
Blackfly is based in California and has made test flights in Canada, where the country’s aviation authority has authorised its use .

Kitty Hawk which is based also in California but tested in Flyer in Las Vegas is under US flying regulations. Flyer operates under FAA CFR Part 103 – Ultralight. FAA does not require aircraft registration or pilot certification though flight training is highly encouraged.

Same regulations covers BlackFly, you don’t need a License to fly, rider or pilots (if you may),   would have to under go a training programme in order to become acquainted.

The Art Of Flying is becoming Affordable

Talking about BlackFly, at its unveiling yesterday, Opener CEO Marcus Leng said “Opener is re-energizing the art of flight with a safe and affordable flying vehicle that can free its operators from the everyday restrictions of ground transportation”. Leng went on to promise affordability, to “democratize three-dimensional personal transportation,” and insisted that safety will be paramount during the flying cars development and testing. The unveiling wowed a lot of people including those regulating the airspace. “Watching BlackFly take flight just blew me away,” said Darren Pleasance, director of the US Experimental Aircraft Association. “I’ve never seen anything like it.”

Leng added “When you press the thumb-stick to climb, you have absolute full control. When you stop in the middle of the air and go off the joystick, the aircraft freezes.

“And when I say freezes… it literally freezes in the air.”

BlackFly can also fly autonomously, Mr Leng said.

Marcus Leng said the on-board controls offered “instant gratification.

Ever Growing Field

Opener joins a long list of companies chasing the ultimate science fiction dream of a flying car, and thanks to rapid improvements in drone capabilities, that future seems closer than ever.

Distance and Speed

BlackFly can travel for up to 25 miles (40km) at a speed of 62mph.

Safety First Design

Considering other technical aspects of the vehicle, it has eight propulsion systems, spread across two wings, provides for multiple-failure security, and the fault-tolerant design and triple modular redundancy should strengthen that safety assurance. For further safety, Blackflyis  amphibious capable of stay afloat in water, the aerial vehicle akso has a ballistic parachute option available when in dire situation.

Its makers say it will eventually cost the same as a typical sports-utility car, but early models will be more expensive.

Energy Efficiency

Opener’s flying car tech has been in development for 9 years, with 1400+ flights, and 12000+ miles under its belt. Being electric, the BlackFly would ideally be powered by a renewable energy source, like home solar panels or wind turbine generators. Above you can see claims for efficiency, and it is said that the BlackFly can be ‘super charged’ in under 30 mins.
