How The Unbreakable OLED Screen was Made.

According to a post by Samsung the Screen display is very different from the common glass-and-OLED screens. Samsung said Display developed the flexible OLED panel with an unbreakable substrate and an overlay window securely adhered to it. Current-generation flexible display products attach a glass-covered window to their display that often breaks when severely impacted.

While smartphone will be the primary recipient of the new unbreakable display panel, Samsung plans to extend it uses to military use, educational environments, and the automobile use.

How the Unbreakable OLED  was Tested

According to UL, the unbreakable display developed by Samsung Display passed the rigorous real-time durability test that is based on military standards set by the U.S. Department of Defense.

The screen was drop tested  at 1.2 meters (nearly 4 feet) above the ground 26 times in succession and it did not break, it was tested at a temperature as high as 71 degrees Celsius and as low as -32°C, it  continued to function normally with no damage to its front, sides or edges.

“The fortified plastic window is especially suitable for portable electronic devices not only because of its unbreakable characteristics, but also because of its lightweight, transmissivity and hardness, which are all very similar to glass,” said Hojung Kim, general manager of the Communication Team, Samsung Display Company.

It was subsequently tested at an height of 1.8M (nearly 6 feet) drop test – significantly higher than the U.S. military standard. Samsung Display’s unbreakable panel operated normally with no sign of damage.

In the video above released by Samsung Display, the unbreakable panel also survives various hammer strikes, which isn’t something we’d recommend replicating on your own glass phone.

Despite the obvious toughness, Samsung Display notes that the panel still has the same visibility offered by glass, along with the same light weight.

While this will bring good news to everyone, once in a while we drop our phones and the how high of the just the sound of the drop will get you scare concerning the bill that it can accrue.
