Recent research have shown that the risk of cancer in our body genetics. While this will seem as though some people are bound to be affected by cancer. It is not necessarily so.
According to American Cancer Society our behavior healthy or lack of it can increase or reduce our risk of cancer. They also added that healthy behaviors could prevent about half of all cancer deaths.
Seven Do’s and Don’ts To Reduce The Risk of Cancer
In this article we consider five healthy lifestyles that can greatly reduce the risk of cancer. We will use the tips from Dr. Anne McTiernan, a cancer prevention researcher at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle.
Avoid Exposure to Radiation
Let’s start with the obvious. Radiation is one of the causes of cancer, so avoiding radioactive material is the best way to reduce the risk of cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, ionizing radiation that comes from gamma rays, high-energy UV rays and X-rays can cause cancer. These rays are linked to cancers of the lung, skin, thyroid, breast and stomach.

Protect Your Skin
This point is similar to the one above, but it is very important to protect your skin from sun rays. Your skin DNA can be damaged by the Ultra Ray from the Sun. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation this can cause genetic mutations that lead to skin cancer. So, if you regularly sunbathe kindly take all the precautions to protect your skin.
Limit Your Alcohol IntSkin
Research have shown that there is a great benefits when alcohol is consumed moderately. It is however very difficult for most people to know what is the right amount of alcohol to take. The moderate amount means no more than two drinks per day for men and one drink per day for women.
According to the American Cancer Society oral cancer is six times more common in alcohol users than in people who don’t drink. McTiernan said, you can’t “save up” all your drinks for a week and then binge on Friday night with your weekly “allotment,”. It is counter productive.
The Smoking habit is one act that has no benefit to the body no matter what addicts say. Smoking is the leading risk factor in cancer cases. Smoking causes a host of cancers, including cancers of the lung, esophagus, mouth, throat, stomach and pancreas, according to the National Cancer Institute. If you’ve tried to quit before, don’t give up eventually something will work, McTiernan said.

Go For Regular Screening
Another important way to prevent the risk of cancer is going for regular screening. There are a lot of benefit when you screen test for cancer. Screening tests can detect cancers of the colon, breast, prostate, cervix and skin early and makes prevention much easier. Ask your Doctor on how often you should go in for the cancer screening. Even if you don’t have any symptoms yet, finding cancer early greatly increases your chances of treatment and even cure. The tested varies, base on the symptom or family history. Screening tests can include physical exams, blood tests, imaging and X-rays and genetic tests.
Stay Physically Active
Being physically active has great benefits for everyone. A research from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that active people have a lower risk of developing colon and breast cancers than people who don’t exercise at all. This does not mean you must go into intensive exercises. Activities such as brisk walking, biking, dancing or any exercise that raises your heart rate and makes you sweat is beneficial.

Be Willing to Take Medication
If after consulting you doctor and he/she advised you to take medication, please you have to consider the option. Medications can reduce your cancer risk. There are several medications that have been tested and found effective for reducing risk for cancer. For example, drugs called selective estrogen receptor modulators can help women with a high risk of developing breast cancer stay cancer-free, according to the Mayo Clinic.
