Huawei Mate X : A 5G Foldable Phone

The Huawei Mate X is the latest arrival in the foldable phone fold. Huawei are going to give Samsung a strong competition with Mate X.  Mate X was announced at the Huawei’s Mate X launch event in the Mobile World Congress 2019, Barcelona.

Samsung have recently announced Galaxy Fold but with Huawei Mate X coming out the foldable phone genre is getting hotter.

Huawei Mate X

Just like the Galaxy Fold, the Mate X is a smartphone-tablet hybrid that folds down the middle, that is where the similarity ends. The Mate X’s display folds on the outside of the device, as opposed to the Galaxy Fold’s inward folding design. However the Mate X’s display remains exposed when the device is folded, a big difference from Galaxy fold. With a smaller bending radius Huewei Mate X will be more durable than the Samsung Galaxy Fold.

Lets have a better look at the Mate X which has three screen modes, four cameras and 5G. A truly  incredible looking phone.

The Huawei Mate X back of screen.

Huawei Mate X has two sides in one body. The screens on one side and the other side a plastic body. The opposite side( plastic side) features a “grip” going along its side that looks a lot like the chin on the old Motorola Razr V3. On the screen side there are two asymmetrical screens.

The Mate X offers a front-facing 5.6-inch screen with a resolution of 2480 x 1148 and a 19.5:9 aspect ratio. The second  screen that folds has a measuring size of 6.38 inches , a resolution of 2480 x 892 and an aspect ratio of 25:9.

When it is unfolded outwardly you get an 8-inch edge-to-edge OLED display with no notch albeit with a camera. Huawei calls the unfolded view “FullView display,” which is wrapped around the outside of the device. The single flexible 8-inch OLED display provides a tablet experience when open, as well as a phone mode. The Mate X in tablet mode is not quite square with an aspect ratio of 8:7.1. Its 2,480 x 2,200 resolution results in 414 pixels per inch with 8:7.1 aspect ratio.

The Mate X internal Hardware and Software

Huawei says that the Mate X is also the “world’s slimmest”, while that may be a title it hold temporary for now, it is surely the most powerful foldable phone out there.

It uses a Quad 5G antenna to connect to the 5G networks coming online this year. Huawei reckons a 1GB movie will take around three seconds to download on this device over 5G. There’s a Kirin 980 processor and the Balong 5000 modem on board. We do know that it will support 5G out of the box, at least assuming the carrier infrastructure is in place by the time it launches. Balong 5000 modem are capable of 4.6Gbps downlink speeds, which is double the industry standard for 5G and ten times what’s currently available with 4G networks. That bandwidth means you can download a 1GB movie in just three seconds at sub-6GHz speeds.

Added to all that power and speed the  phone features 8GB of RAM and 512GB of internal storage.
