A Real Problem

The comment sections of videos were being used by paedophiles to drop obscene or sexual comments. They you the comment sections to communicate too.

In February this year (2019) advertisers including AT&T, Nestle and Hasbro suspended their ads after more predatory activity was found.

With this antecedents you will agree that YouTube’s new policy is spot on.

Disabling comments on videos featuring minors

The new policy statement say videos of very young children would automatically have the comments section disabled.

Videos of toddlers uploaded by parents, as well as short films featuring children by established YouTube stars will likely be affected. A video v of a teenager doing gymnastics that can attract predatory comments will also be affected.

Will The Ban Affect All Video content makers?

The short answer to that is No.

YouTube answer this in the recent blog post. Read it for yourselves:

“A small number of creators will be able to keep comments enabled on these types of videos. These channels will be required to actively moderate their comments, beyond just using our moderation tools, and demonstrate a low risk of predatory behavior. We will work with them directly and our goal is to grow this number over time as our ability to catch violative comments continues to improve.”

Other Measures By YouTube

YouTube says along with the ban they are launching a new comments classifier. One that will be  more effective in identifying and removing predatory comments. If you are a video creator you have to take note of that they too can play their part in removing such comments.

Content creators will also be in a position to lose their Chanel if the promote content that encourage minors to harm themselves.

Videos encouraging harmful and dangerous challenges targeting any audience are also clearly against YouTube’s new policies.

If you are a YouTube user like me, don’t fail to flag any content that is against the YouTube community policy.
