Foldable Phones: Huawei Mate X vs Samsung Galaxy Fold

The 2019 Mobile World Congress have ended and have bought us many a lot of new handy techs. So far we have seen that 2019 is the year of the foldable phones. Samsung first unveiled its foldable phone, the Galaxy Fold, with a single display that can bend and fold inward. Few days later Huawei has also launched its newest Foldable phone ( Huawei Mate X). The competition just got hotter, Motorola have a  foldable phone lined up to be released later this year.

A new comer in the foldable smartphone wars is Oppo. The  company’s vice president, Brian Shen, has recently showed off this an unnamed prototype foldable on Weibo, a Chinese social media site.

However the real foldable battle is between Huawei Mate X Foldable Phone vs Samsung Galaxy Fold. Now join me as I will dissect their strength and differences using five (5) different criteria. Let’s begin:

Samsung Galaxy Fold :Even though both are foldable phone they fold differently, the Galaxy fold folds on the inside very different from Mate X. The Samsung galaxy Fold’s body has innovative  hinge system with multiple interlocking gears is hidden inside the spine. The Samsung Galaxy Fold body is reportedly 17mm thick. Samsung Galaxy Fold goes from a 4.6-inch display for phone mode and folds out to reveal a separate 7.3-inch display((18.5cm) tablet-like display) on the inside.The smaller 4.6-inch display has a resolution of 1,960 × 840 pixels. The 7.3-inch Infinity Flex display has a resolution of 2,152 × 1,536 pixels.

Huawei Mate X : Mate come with a nice sleek body that is very flat and it is still flat even when it is folded. Huawei claims that Mate X as “world’s slimmest” foldable phone, with just 11 millimeters (or 0.43 inches) thick when folded you have to agree. Mate X featured an innovative “grip” going along its side that looks a lot like the chin on the old Motorola Razr V3. The Grip allows the user to have a good hold of the phone when opened fully.

The Mate X’s display folds on the outside of the device, as opposed to the Galaxy Fold’s inward folding design.The Mate X offers a front-facing 5.6-inch screen with a resolution of 2480 x 1148 and a 19.5:9 aspect ratio. The second  screen that folds has a measuring size of 6.38 inches , a resolution of 2480 x 892 and an aspect ratio of 25:9.

The Mate X in tablet mode is not quite square with an aspect ratio of 8:7.1. Its 2,480 x 2,200 resolution results in 414 pixels per inch with 8:7.1 aspect ratio.

Hardware And Software

Samsung Galaxy Fold: But Devices rock so much power. The Galaxy Fold willbe powered by Android 9.0 Pie.  The Samsung Galaxy Fold also has a 7nm processor and 12GB of RAM. There’s 512GB of universal flash storage, so it can read data twice as fast as other smartphones.

Huawei Mate X: There’s a Kirin 980 processor and the Balong 5000 modem on board the Mate X. For your information the  Balong 5000 modem is very capable of offering 4.6Gbps downlink speeds, which is double the industry standard for 5G.  The Mate X also feature a 8GB of RAM and 512GB of internal storage.

Samsung Galaxy Fold: There are actually six cameras in the Samsung Galaxy Fold. Three on the back make up the main camera, combining a wide, ultrawide, and telephoto lens. All the cameras have different functions.

Huawei Mate X: The Mate X is confirmed that it will have four cameras in March when it will be released.

Samsung Galaxy Fold: The Samsung Galaxy Fold actually has two batteries inside, one in each side of the device, to get around the problem of having to have a folding battery. Each of the batteries is rated at 4,380mAh

Huawei Mate X: The Mate X has two separate batteries , with each battery behind each foldable screen. The two batteries adds up to 4,500 mAh powering the Mate X.

Huawei Mate X: The Huawei Mate X will come with only one configuration which is the 5G thanks to Huawei’s Balong 5000 modem and will be powered by the Kirin 980 processor.

Samsung Galaxy Fold:  The Galaxy Fold will have both 4G and 5G configurations. You wont be tied to used 5G if you are not able to pay for it.Users should be free to chose what network they want to use.

Over all that is a 3-2 Victory for Huawei Mate X.  Both are good devices but they won’t come cheap at all. The Samsung Galaxy Fold will come in LTE and 5G versions and it will launch on April 26, starting at $1,980(£1,515). The 5G version will come with a different price tag.

Huawei Mate X will be available from “mid-summer”  and it was revealed it will cost  a whopping 2299 euros (~$2600).
